DREAMS & REFLECTIONS
The Blue Mailbox Farm is in
Hickman County and two native Hickman
County women gained national fame: Beth Slater Whitson and Sara Ophelia
Colley Cannon. Whitson wrote several hundred songs, including “Let
Me Call You Sweetheart” and “Meet Me
Tonight in Dreamland.” Cannon gained world acclaim as
Minnie Pearl on the Grand Ole Opry
and the television show Hee Haw.
Some say "MUSIC IS A REFLECTION OF SOCIETY" and others say "SOCIETY IS A REFLECTION OF MUSIC". I believe it works both ways. When I was growing up, music influenced me greatly. Thanks to the big band musicians in my hometown, I was guided to an appreciation of music of the highest quality. Then came Rock and Roll, some people called it the "devil's music" and it had its effect on many people in maybe not-so-good ways. I feel I was able to extract from Rock and Roll and all other forms to come along, the best qualities of them because of my upbringing by the big band musicians.
Therefore, considering the negative, degrading and vulgar subculture of today's "bang a drum and swear music" industry and the "rap and hip hop" profiteers who cram it down the throats of our youth, I think it's time for the real, quality people and performers to take a stand and present themselves and their quality music to today's young people. Was the First Amendment written to permit this example of bad taste? I sadly suppose so.
Which brings us to my dream, that the Blue Mailbox Farm can have a small, intimate performance center where families can bring their kids and expose them to quality music and performers of all genres. And that all profits from donations, and money raised from events go to encourage talented young people with our farm music programs, lessons and instruments for those who can't afford them.
It's a wonderful thing to watch a performer close his eyes and feel the self satisfaction of creating his art, and an inspiration to all who see it.
